About Finanstilsynet

Finanstilsynet is an independent government agency that builds on laws and decisions emanating from the Storting (Norwegian parliament), the government and the Ministry of Finance. Finanstilsynet also participates in extensive international cooperation. Through the EEA Agreement, EU financial market regulation is implemented in Norwegian law.

Finanstilsynet's main goal

Finanstilsynet will promote financial stability and well-functioning markets. Financial stability means that the financial system is able to handle disruptions and unexpected events and carry out its functions, thereby precluding major, negative consequences for the rest of the economy and for consumers.

Domestic cooperation

Finanstilsynet is committed to maintaining good communication and dialogue with the industries under supervision and has established regular contact meetings with the industry organisations.

International cooperation

International cooperation is important to ensure relevant and effective supervision of an ever more integrated financial sector. Common principles and rules for the financial industry and financial supervision are prepared by international bodies. Finanstilsynet cooperates closely with the financial supervisory authorities in the EEA on supervision and regulatory development and also participates in global supervisory activity.

Annual Report

The Annual Report includes the agency's activities in the sectors under supervision, i.e. banking and finance, insurance, securities market, financial reporting supervision – listed companies, auditing, external accounting services, estate agency and debt collection. It also covers supervision of ICT systems in the financial sector, measures to combat money laundering and Finanstilsynet's international activities.
